Two FANUC M-900iA/600 (700kg) robots use iRvision and coordinated motion to transfer an engine block from a conveyer to a precision pallet to begin the engine assembly, the engine block is accurately placed onto a precision pallet using iRvision. The engine block is then conveyed to an M-900iA where the main bearing caps are located with iRvision, and removed in preparation for crankshaft installation. A FANUC M-710iC robot installs the main bearings. iRvision is used to locate and verify the correct bearing is being installed, iRvision is used to verify the orientation of the crankshaft, before an M-900iA installs it in the engine block. The M-900iA/350 installs the main bearing caps, and precisely torques the bolts, securing the crankshaft in the engine block.
An M-710iC operating at an in process verification station uses iRvision and a robot auxiliary axis to measure crankshaft torque and end play. An R-2000iT Toploader robot picks a rack of engine pistons from a buffer area, and carries them to the piston insertion cell. An R-2000iB and an M-900iA/350 use iRvision and aux axes to install the pistons into the engine in a precisely coordinated process. The FANUC iRVision system is a ready-to-use robotic vision package, available on all FANUC robots, requiring only a camera and cable – no additional processing hardware.
