This FANUC Robotics flexible rough finishing cell, in production at a large ductile iron foundry, has eliminated a difficult and dangerous manual process, reduced labor and workers comp costs, and has provided much more consistent product quality. The M-900iA/350 robot uses a FANUC Robotics 2D iRVision system to locate and pick up a part from a belt conveyor with a two jaw parallel gripper. The robot then takes the part to a large grinder with a 24” diameter diamond grinding wheel where it removes large gates and flash from the first side of the part. The Robot then places the part to a re-grip stand, the iRVision locates it, and the Robot picks the part up from the other side. The Robot then takes the part back to the large grinder to remove flash on the second side of the part. The Robot then moves the part to a smaller 3” diameter diamond grinding wheel where it removes flash from the inside diameter of the part. The Robot then takes the part to and places it onto an outfeed belt conveyor.
